Cowes WWTP Upgrade

Client: Westernport Water

Role: Commissioning Manager

As client side Commissioning Manager on behalf of Westernport Water, Janson Projects successfully oversaw the upgrade of the Cowes Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for Westernport Region Water Corporation, which provides water and wastewater services to approximately 19,000 properties on Phillip Island. The project enhanced the plant's capacity to handle the forecasted BOD and hydraulic demands through 2046, with new infrastructure designed to meet projected requirements up to 2076.

The project scope included:

  • Replacing one of the existing aerators

  • Constructing a new clarifier with provisions for a future fourth clarifier

  • Building a new RAS pump station to service the existing two clarifiers, the new third clarifier, and a planned fourth unit

  • Installing a scum pump station to manage scum and floating plastics from clarifier surfaces

Additional work incorporated into the project included:

  • Screening mixed liquor before it enters the clarifiers

  • Modifying the mixed liquor pump station to accommodate future flows

  • Developing piping and instrumentation diagrams for the entire plant, excluding the recycled water system

Janson Projects’ expertise ensured the seamless delivery of this vital infrastructure upgrade, supporting the region’s long-term wastewater management needs.
