Wentworth to Broken Hill Pipeline

Wentworth to Broken Hill Pipeline

Client: Water NSW
Role: SCADA & Commissioning Manager

The Wentworth to Broken Hill Pipeline is a major piece of public infrastructure supplying up to 37.4 megalitres of raw water per day via a 270 kilometre pipeline from the River Murray near Wentworth to Broken Hill. Find out more on the project here.

Acting as Client side SCADA & Commissioning Manager on behalf of WaterNSW, Janson Projects successfully delivered the multi-stage infrastructure project, which encompassed the design and construction of critical water supply, treatment, and power systems. The project was executed in three separable portions, addressing distinct elements of the works with precision and efficiency.

Separable Portion 1: The Pipeline

This portion included the detailed design and construction of:

  • A screened river offtake from the River Murray near Wentworth

  • A pump station to deliver raw water from the offtake

  • Approximately 270 km of underground supply pipeline constructed from Australian rolled steel, connecting the River Murray offtake to a new bulk water storage facility near Broken Hill

  • A series of supply pump stations and associated infrastructure to deliver raw water, including storages as needed

  • A bulk water storage facility near Broken Hill

  • SCADA, telemetry, and PLC systems

  • The relocation of an existing DN300 PVC raw water main from the Wentworth Shire Council Wet Well Pump Station to the Silver City Highway

  • The construction of a conduit crossing for the Supply Pipeline and Pooncarie Road

  • The decommissioning and demolition of the Wentworth Abandoned Wet Well

Separable Portion 2: Essential Water Returnable Works

This portion focused on water delivery and treatment infrastructure, including:

  • A pump station and associated pipework connecting the Bulk Water Storage to a new balance tank at the Mica Street Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Broken Hill

  • A new balance tank at the Mica Street WTP

  • Upgrades to the existing Mica Street WTP and Stephens Creek pipeline

  • Electrical, control, and SCADA systems

Separable Portion 3: Power Supply Returnable Works

This portion involved the design and construction of:

  • High-voltage network mains and related power transmission lines

  • Additional power infrastructure required by the Energy Network Operator to supply power to assets constructed under Separable Portions 1 and 2

Janson Projects’ expertise ensured the seamless execution of each project stage, delivering vital infrastructure to support the region's long-term water supply and treatment needs.
